Hey there! Hope the holidays treated everyone amicably, and everyone still has enough juice left to make to the new year. I’ve been at home enjoying the snow and trying to get prepped for the X Games next month (more on that soon). In the meantime, Pixiq, a really cool photo site has posted an interview about my photo project, The Rolling Exhibition. The difference between this and the others is that they actually let me geek out and explain how the series was technically pulled off.

Most of the images were captured at ISO 320. “If I was shooting in an open area and there wasn’t too much contrast in light, I would usually trust the program mode. If I was shooting between buildings, at night, or in any situation with contrasty light—I’d go manual, though I’d never go wider than f/8, if I could avoid it,” Kevin explains.

If the above paragraph makes sense, you might dig the full article – which can be found right here.

So I feel that a bit of an apology is owed with how lax I’ve been in regards to the whole blogging/tweeting/facebooking of late; especially during the release of the paperback. However, I do have a small excuse. I’m building the proposal for my next project, and so I hit the road with my younger sister Meagan for a bit of a tour through Turkey and the Balkans.

Some good stories are on the way, though! Seducing stray dogs, getting assaulted in a Turkish bath, and getting heavily pet by a couple of gypsies! Right now I’m having to deal with community computers and very limited access, so I’ll just leave a few photos to wet the pallette. Back soon!

So it’s finally done. After starting work on this monoski back in August, it’s amazing to finally see the finished product. I gotta admit, I was going to post these yesterday, but was a little nervous about how well it would work on the snow and didn’t want to count my chickens too early. Below are some photos I took comparing this new rig to the old one so you can see the difference in terms of design and durability.

And as a bit of a key – every little band of silver that you see around the top part of my old frame is from having to weld old breaks.

And here’s the new one. Can you say upgrade?

Here’s a dead-on comparison of the frame.

Old one

New one

Old one

New one

I had my first ride on this machine yesterday, and I gotta say… it’s pretty incredible. The balance and response of the machine is such a dramatic improvement over the old rig that was left almost speechless for the first few runs. There’s still work to do – we want to recalibrate the shock and lighten the frame a little – but this is a hell of a first step.

I’m going to be working on a photo shoot for Outside Magazine over the next couple of days, and so hopefully I’ll have some shots of this thing in action before too long. Check back!

One of the best parts of being a traveling photographer is getting to interact with kids in so many different countries. This short series was taken in Soweto in late July. As three o’clock rolled round and the kids began their trek back home from school, I found myself in their midst – surrounded by some territorial first graders.

Once order was restored, and they saw that my spot on their turf was temporary, they were keen to get their portrait taken. With a mix of kids, the bigger ones were pushing their way to the front to try and be closest to the camera. Pulling out the inner drill seargant, I barked the rules.

“Hey! You all can get you’re pictures taken, but you have to line up and go one at a time. Otherwise I won’t do it.”

That wised them up and everyone got their fair shot. Hope you dig.
